Florida Sun Without The Burn
by James Mikel
With the economy the way that it is many are invading Florida instead of the Caribbean or other warm climates. The room rates are down-especially outside of the Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach. The sun is shinning and you won't feel the burn of spending extra dollars on airfare for a carib vaca. I grew up in Miami and here is one of my favorite vacation spots-off the grid. All by yourself-a private beach.
At Homestead Bayfront Park, go to the North Entrance-which is free to enter. Park in the North Lot, adjacent to the walking pier cut through the mangroves and make your way through the clear ankle deed water about 20 yards to the West. There is a small flat adjoining a channel about 2 foot deep. In all my years of standing on that flat I have never seen another sole print in that sand. Bring a rod, some shrimp and a chair. In the summer, the bones come in when there is an early morning rising tide. Until you see their tails flickering you can watch the brown pelicans dive for fish or watch the gulls loom overhead. Every spring a group of porpoises come on the flat and feed on the mullet. You may just get lucky, as I have caught snook, tarpon, redfish, and permit from the deeper edge of the flat.
